The Premier of the North West, Edna Molewa will officially open the House of
Traditional Leaders on Tuesday, 4 April 2006, at Ga-Lowe in Mafikeng at
10h00.
The House of Traditional Leaders is tasked to oversee traditional matters in
communities. They also advice government on matters relating to customs,
traditions and other related issues affecting communities in the province. They
are expected to work closely with municipalities in enhancing the programme of
action of government.
The Chairperson of the House of Traditional Leaders, Kgosi Moshe Mabe,
expressed excitement with regard to the opening of the house. "I cannot wait
that we get back to work, this year's opening coincides with the formation the
new local government following an increased mandate from the people of the
country. We look forward to working effectively with our municipalities making
things happen for our people," said Kgosi Mabe.
This yearâs programme will start with a cultural day where a cow will be
slaughtered in a Setswana way on Monday, 3 April 2006, at 12h00. Pupils from
schools around Mafikeng have been invited to a ceremony to be introduced to
Setswana tradition related to slaughtering of a cow.
The aim of this is to introduce these children to cultural activities at an
early stage of their development so that they start to appreciate their origin
as soon as possible. A 'kgotla' will be constructed where the slaughtering will
take place.
Media is invited to attend both ceremonies. Journalists are requested to
confirm their attendance with Malentswe Tsheole at 083 578 1876.
