The Minister of Human Settlements, Thembi Simelane and the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Angie Motshekga have made an undertaking to eradicate the military veterans housing backlog by 2029.
Accompanied by MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Mr S. Duma, Executive Mayors of uMshwathi Local Municipality, Cllr. Mandla. Zondi, and uMgungundlovu District Municipality, Cllr.Mzi. Zuma, theMinisters were addressing communitymembers and housing beneficiaries, including military veterans, elderly, destitute and child-headed households at the uMshwathi Local Municipality, in KwaZuluNatal.
Directly, addressing the military veterans, Minister Motshekga acknowledged the delay in the delivery of houses for the military veterans. She informed the gathering that President Cyril Ramaphosa had implored them (Ministers) to try finish everything they have started, particularly, military veterans housing backlog.
The Ministers have directed provinces to embark on a verification of all Bonafide military veterans in need of houses. Currently, KwaZulu Natal hasmanaged to verify and confirm 490, military veterans who require housing. The province is currently involved in a process to ensure these are delivered as soon as possible.
“TogetherwithMinister Simelane,we shall endeavor to do our level best to finish,whatwe can during this term of office. Military veterans sacrificed their lives and families so that we can have a free and democratic South Africa. We should honour them for the sacrifices you, said MinisterMotshekga.
Meanwhile, Minister Simelane applauded the province and eThekwini Municipality for their concerted efforts to ensure flood victims are provided with permanent houses. She visited Cornubia. Already 113 units are being completed and expected to be handed to the beneficiaries inMay 2026.
“I take comfort that the procurement process to appoint contractors to build 976 units is at an advanced stage. We challenge those that will be appointed that they deliver on time, within budget and quality houses”, saidMinister Simelane.
