Tragic death of two correctional officials at Nigel
Correctional Centre

Yesterday evening, 5 January 2006, at about 23:10, two correctional
officials who were performing their custodial duties at Nigel correctional
centre died under mysterious conditions.

It is alleged that Ms Tiny Mekoa (27) shot Mr Patrick Mavuso (30) six times
before turning the gun on herself. Both officials died instantly.

The circumstances and reasons that triggered this unfortunate tragedy are
not yet known. The investigations are currently underway from both the
Department of Correctional Services and South African Police Service to
determine the cause of this incident.

The families of both the deceased have been informed and the Deputy Regional
Commissioner of Gauteng Region, Mrs Shishi Mthabela, has conveyed her
condolences to the bereaved families and has encouraged all the correctional
officials to make use of the departmental systems available to all the
employees like the employee assistance programme and consult social workers,
psychologist, religious workers to voice out their problems including their
personal problems.
