Department of Correctional Services hosts second National
Corrections Excellence Awards ceremony

The Department of Correctional Services is to host the second National
Corrections Excellence Awards Gala Dinner on 16 April 2009, at the Emperor’s
Palace in Johannesburg. The event is aimed at acknowledging and celebrating
those officials within the department who performance excellently in their
work.

There are five categories namely, Batho Pele, Masibambisane, Mlombile, Good
Governance and Public Safety as well as three special awards, Minister’s,
Deputy Minister’s and National Commissioner’s Awards.

These categories cater for specific areas of operation and focus on
recognising officials who contribute towards enhancing security and humane
treatment of offenders, reduction of escapes and improving compliance with the
security standards policy for safe custody for the benefit of communities and
officials.

Others will be recognised for championing societal participation in
corrections, strengthening rehabilitation programmes, spearheading poverty
alleviation programmes, and promoting restorative justice and community
empowerment.

The night is a culmination of a process that started at the regional offices
and all the winners who took the honours at the different regions will now
compete for the national awards.

All winners are to be organised into a pool of ambassadors that will anchor
networks of best performers and their primary focus will be to influence the
overall culture among all officials so that the entire department is galvanised
into cadreship of excellence.
