The Mpumalanga Department of Local Government and Housing is to expedite
processes to deliver houses to most destitute families in the province.
Department MEC Candith Mashego-Dlamini made the undertaking at the handing over
of a low-cost house to a family at KaNyamazane near Nelspruit. The
three-bedroomed fully-furnished houses have been made possible by the
Mpumalanga Housing Finance Company (MHFCo) by topping up the department's
housing subsidy.
The house to the Mashaba family is part of MHFCO's social responsibility to
assist beneficiaries throughout the province. The size of the houses is 54
square meters and the total value of the house is R130 000 including the
furniture. Dudu Mashaba (37) is a destitute mother of three school going age
children who lost her husband. She received a donated stand from the former
Premier's family, Mathews Phosa in Kanyamazane. Mashaba and her children have
been staying in a shack for several years until their plight was identified by
the Phosas and the department and MHFCO intervened.
"To be able to work as government and private sector to take care of the
needy shows that government is fully committed to take care of all its
citizens," said MEC Mashego-Dlamini. MHFCO has started building houses as its
social responsibility in all districts in the province. A pilot project that
was started in Nkangala, Tweefontein has since been completed and this is the
second project in the province. Other needy families have been identified and
the same assistance will apply. The Mashaba family was also given donations in
a form of food parcels and blankets.
