Madiba Municipal Services Zone Centre to be opened during Water
Week

23 March 2006

Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry Buyelwa Sonjica will, as part of
National Water Week 2006, open the Madiba Municipal Services Zone Centre, a job
creation sanitation project initiated by Alfred Nzo District Municipality.

The event is scheduled as follows;
Date: Tuesday, 28 March 2006
Venue: Potseng Village, Matatiele (map available)
Time: 10:00-13:00

The event will not only mark the launch of the project and Water Week
celebrations but will also see the District Municipality receive a trophy from
the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) for Best Practice Job
Creation Programme in the Eastern Cape.

The Municipal Services Zone Centres seek not only to create jobs for
communities, but also to bring closer (in the long term) municipal services to
the people who never had access to them before. The projects entail the
construction of bricks, slab, toilet doors and seats and are designed to
accommodate municipal wards that are clustered in zones and are situated in
deep rural areas. It is envisaged that the second phase will concentrate on
operations and maintenance of water services and the third team will focus on
road labour intensive maintenance programme using the Expanded Public Works
Programme (EPWP) Principles.

The projects place important emphasis on the use local labour, poverty
alleviation and community driven rural development with water being the main
local resource used to drive such development.

Media are invited to attend.
