dedicated public health workers in Gauteng
8 November 2006
Gauteng Department of Health will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the
provincial Khanyisa Service Excellence Awards with a function to be held at the
Velmore Conference Centre, Centurion, on Tuesday, 14 November 2006.
The Khanyisa awards are one of several interventions undertaken by the
Gauteng Health Department to celebrate excellence in healthcare provision and
thereby improve service delivery across the province. The awards will inform
the media and the public about some of the exemplary services and dedicated
health workers who work within the Gauteng public health sector.
The awards aim to further entrench Batho Pele principles within the health
department, recognise health workers who prioritise the needs of patients and
customers and to motivate excellent delivery of both clinical and general
services within the public health sector.
"The department honours and rewards health workers who live and work
according to the principles of Batho Pele and the Patient's Health Charter, use
the public resources responsibly, meet the prescribed high standards of care
and act as ambassadors and carers for patients," says Mrs Sybil Ngcobo, Head of
Department (HoD) at Gauteng Health.
This year's ceremony will recognise winners in the following categories:
1. Khanyisa Service Excellence Award for Group Projects, which combine
different aspects of clinical service within an institution
2. The Kick-Start Award, which is designed to encourage innovation in areas of
service where extraordinary challenges need to be addressed creatively. This
year's sub-categories are:
* hand-washing campaign aimed at infection control
* pressure care, which recognises health workers who look after patients'
morbidity and particularly their efforts in preventing the development of bed
sores
3. Individual Recognition Awards which honour exceptional individuals,
regardless of the type of work they perform (medical care, oral health,
nursing, administration, support services, emergency services and institutional
managers)
4. Outstanding Performance Awards, given to the Best Hospital, Sub-district and
Best Community Health Centre.
The prize money that is received is used for improvement of health services,
rather than for an individual's benefit. Over the years vital services have
been upgraded as a result of the Khanyisa awards.
Media are invited to attend the function at the Velmore Conference Centre,
Centurion, on Tuesday, 14 November 2006.
