Gauteng mourns the passing of jazz prodigy Moses Khumalo

6 September 2006

The Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation would like to
express its heartfelt condolences on behalf of the provincial government to the
family of South Africa's jazz prodigy Moses Khumalo and friends.

Khumalo was born in Meadowlands, Soweto in 1979. He studied at Thobeka
Primary School and completed his matric at Pace Community College. Moses then
went on to study at Manu Technical College from 1994 - 1998 where he
specialised in music. Moses received a diploma in music theory, music history,
and oral (including songwriting and ensemble) as well as performance saxophone
and piano.

Moses's first gig was at the Grahamstown Festival in 1995 with the Soweto
Youth Jazz Band, under the auspices of Mokale Koapeng. He also engaged in the
upliftment of the youth in Soweto where he worked with aspiring young jazz
artists. He was also part of the Gauteng Puisano Jazz Club.

He burst onto the local jazz scene as a member of the late pianist Moses
Molelekwa's band and spent years performing both locally and abroad. His fresh
talent and remarkable ability lead to a great demand for the young saxophonist
who has performed with the likes of Hugh Masekela, Sibongile Khumalo, Themba
Mkhize and Paul Hanmer.

"On behalf of the Gauteng Provincial Government our hearts are with his
family in this moment of bereavement," said MEC for Sports, Arts, Culture and
Recreation Barbara Creecy. "The African soil from which he drew his inspiration
will reclaim the mortal remains of Moses Khumalo, but his music will be an
eternal monument to his genius."
