Creecy to launch Gauteng Sports Council
9 March 2009
The Gauteng MEC for Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Barbara Creecy,
will launch the Gauteng Sports Council (GSC) on 14 March 2009. The launch,
which will be held at the Gauteng Sports House, marks a turning point of sports
development in the Gauteng Province.
The Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG), since the advent of democracy 15
years ago, has consistently strived to promote sport development across a
broader spectrum of people; transform the sector demographically and support
high and competitive sport performance. The launch of the Gauteng Sports
Council, at a concrete level, realises these commitments.
The GSC unites all sport stakeholders - from local community level to
provincial level, from youth to the elderly-in a partnership mandated to
enhance sport development in the province and ensure access, equity and redress
in the sports sector. Suffice to mention that the council will comprise of and
be driven by sport people themselves.
"We believe that the establishment of proper sporting structures throughout
the province is of central importance. These structures must play a role in
building local level sports structures; assisting government with the roll out
of local clubs and school sport and drive transformation in all sporting codes
and the sports sector as a whole," said MEC Creecy when commenting on the
pending launch of the provincial sports structure. Media practitioners are
invited to attend the launch.
