Agriculture Director-General visits Taurus

31 August 2006

Pretoria: In its quest to meet with key agricultural sector role players
throughout the country, the Department of Agriculture’s top management visited
Taurus Livestock Improvement Co-operative at Irene, south of Pretoria on
Thursday, 31 August 2006.

Taurus Co-operative is a primary agricultural co-operative involved in
livestock improvement and plays an important role in the functioning of
institutions that are vital to the cattle industry in South Africa. The
co-operative has a shareholding in a milk analysis laboratory, is a member of
the milk recording governing body, liases with the main dairy and beef breed
societies and is a major player in local dairy progeny testing scheme.

The Department has been closely co-operating with Taurus in developing
programmes within the Livestock Development Strategy (LDS) aimed at improving
production and profits of emerging livestock farmers in the country.
Key to that are capacity building, support and technology transfer in
artificial insemination and official beef and milk recording, which will
culminate into participation in InterGIS, a state-owned genetic recording and
information system.

The Department endeavours to further identify areas of collaboration with
other role players within the livestock improvement industry who are
strategically placed to assist in implementing these identified interventions
within the LDS.
This is a joint statement by the Department of Agriculture (DoA) and Taurus
