Agriculture on consumption of dog meat in Draft Policy for Care and
Protection of Animals in South Africa

No dog meat for consumption in draft policy

10 July 2007

A misunderstanding has been created that the Draft Policy for the Care and
Protection of Animals in South Africa is considering dog meat for human
consumption. The Draft Policy for the Care and Protection of Animals in South
Africa does not make reference to consumption of dog meat.

The Draft Policy seeks to address proactive and responsible care and
protection of animals in South Africa taking the following into
consideration:

* developing the animal care and protection capacity within the
Department
* funding for welfare-related initiatives
* the adaptation of existing codes of practice for use as regulations in terms
of the existing legislation
* regulations to enforce the registration of animal care and protection,
organisations and animal care and protection inspectors
* codes for laboratory animals, wildlife care, companion animals and other
working animals.

The Draft Policy will be made available for public scrutiny in due
course.
