National minister and MECs to address social issues

Mrs Edna Molewa, national Minister for Social Development and the nine MECs will tomorrow engage in site visits to round off their visit to the quarterly MINMEC meeting held in Cape Town.

Attending this meeting will be MECs for Social Development across the country, and hosting the meeting is Dr Ivan Meyer, Western Cape MEC for Social Development.

You are encouraged to join the department on Friday, March 12, 2010 for a media briefing at Horizon Secure Care Centre in Faure.

The briefing will start at 13h00

MINMEC is a forum consisting of the national minister, deputy minister and provincial MECs as well as heads of departments. The platform is then set, whereby strategic matters facing the provinces are discussed.

Discussions will be based on some of the following issues: strategy to combat social ills, with specific focus on substance abuse, state of readiness to implement the children’s Act Social Security Retirement Reform.

The itinerary for the day is as follows:

The MINMEC delegation will kick off in Mitchell’s Plain, where learners of the Glendale High School will be addressed on the issue of substance abuse. The group will then move from Glendale High School to the multi-purpose centre in Khayelitsha. From there the entourage will move to Horizon Secure Care Centre where delegates will visit the facility and engage with the facility managers on various challenges facing them.

After the visit to the centre, Minister Molewa will then engage the media on the resolutions taken, as well as a way forward. It is imperative to note that the provincial government in partnership with the national government is committed to efficient service delivery, and you are therefore welcome to attend and find out more about what the government is doing, to resolve issues for its citizens.
