Mpumalanga MECs Vusi Shongwe and Reginah Mhaule take learners to prison

The Mpumalanga Departments of Community Safety, Security and Liaison and Education will team up with the Department of Correctional Services to take over 300 secondary school learners to Barberton Correctional facilities in February.

The purpose of the tour is to enable learners to experience first-hand life behind bars with a hope of discouraging them to do crime. It is also meant to assist with dispelling the myth that life is good in prisons. During the visits learners will also be encouraged not to embrace criminality but rather focus on pursuing positive lifestyles as that would yield good future for them.

The programme, which is part of the Mpumalanga Government’s integrated School Safety Strategy, will also enable inmates to share their stories with the learners so that they can see that crime does not pay.

Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe and his Education counterpart, Ms.Regina Mhaule will lead the first group of 60 learners’ visit to Correctional facilities. Other 240 learners will be taken to facilities before the end of February.
