Ministry congratulates Andile Lungisa

The Minister in The Presidency, Collins Chabane would like to congratulate Mr Andile Lungisa who has been elected President of the Pan-African Youth Union (PYU) on behalf of South Africa on Monday, 5 December 2011.

Mr Andile Lungisa who is the Chairperson of the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), was elected unopposed for a three year term at the third Pan-African Youth Union Congress held in Khartoum, Sudan. The Congress which took place from 2 to 5 December also elected Mali as the Secretary General and Namibia as the Sothern Region Vice President and Zimbabwe as Deputy Secretary General.

"Mr Lungisa comes into the position with extensive experience both in youth development in South Africa and as former Deputy President of the PYU. His election is a clear indication of confidence in South Africa to lead youth development issues on the continent. The experience of Mr Lungisa will definitely assist him in ensuring that youth development matters receive the necessary attention in Africa. We congratulate him and wish him and his executive well in their new role” says Minister Chabane.

The PYU is a continental youth body recognised by the African Union (AU) Heads of Governments and States to coordinate youth development in the African continent, thus serving as a voice for young people. It is the only youth focal point of the African Union on youth development matters.

The main aims of the PYU among others are;

  • To inform, mobilise and build capacity of youths in Africa to be active players in the economic, political as well as cultural development and processes in the continent;
  • Ensure compliance and effective implementation of the African Youth Charter as well as instruments developed by the African Union;
  • Create a platform for young people to contribute to the PYU and AU agendas.

The Congress further elected Egypt for position of Vice President for the Northern Region and Libya as Deputy Secretary General. In the Central Region Gabon was elected Vice President while Congo Brazzaville was elected Deputy Secretary General. In the Eastern Region Eretria was elected Vice President while South Sudan was elected Deputy Secretary General. In the West African Region Senegal was elected Vice President while Nigeria was elected Deputy Secretary General.
