Minister Sonjica holds Water Indaba in the Western Cape

Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs Ms Buyelwa Sonjica will visit the Western Cape for a Water Indaba on 23 to 24 November 2009 that is to take place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre at 08h00.

The provincial Water Indaba is a platform created by the Minister that aims to facilitate engagement around critical water challenges facing the Western Cape Province including issues such as climate change, drought and water regulation.

This initiative is also driven by the need to find common solutions that cater for the water sector, hence the critical participation of stakeholders among whom, the Office of the Premier, city of Cape Town, Overberg Water Board, South African Local Government Association (SALGA) and the Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning.

Three specific themes will be covered during the Indaba, namely:

* River Improvement programme
* Integrated water management plan
* Access to basic services

The Water Indaba is an action oriented exercise during which water for growth and development framework will be discussed. The Western Cape province will then be able to forge a provincial water action plan to fast track water service delivery.

Pre Water Indabas were held in the four water management areas in the province with the relevant stakeholders to roll-up pertinent issues to be discussed at the Indaba with the Minister.
