Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion World Conference

The eighth World Conference on Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion will
take place at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Durban from 2 to 5
April 2006. About 1200 participants from over 130 countries will attend the
conference. The participants represent the world's most eminent scientists,
public health and safety promotion advocates gathered together to discuss such
diverse themes as road safety, violence prevention, safe communities, workplace
and home safety.

Accreditation procedures

Journalists who wish to cover the conference will need to complete and
submit the Media Registration form. Journalists should submit appropriate media
credentials as part of their registration application. This includes a
recognised press card with photo identification, or a letter with an official
letterhead from the editor of a publication or radio/television producer
stating that you are covering the conference for your organization.

Freelance journalists who wish to cover the conference should provide a
press card or copy of a by-lined article published during the past year, or
letter with an official letterhead from the editor of a publication or
radio/television producer stating that you are covering the conference for your
organisation. Journalists who register will receive free meal vouchers in their
conference bags, along with the comprehensive programme and CD of
abstracts.

Media wishing to attend the opening ceremony are requested to register on
Saturday, 1 April between 15:00 and 17:00 at the Conference Registration Desk
on parking level at ICC Durban, to avoid the rush of delegates who will be
registering on Sunday morning, on-site registration will be possible during the
course of the conference.

Opening Ceremony

The Opening Ceremony will be held on Sunday, 2 April, at the ICC at 14:00.
Her Majesty Queen Rania Al-Abdullah of Jordan will deliver the keynote address.
The Honourable Minister of Health, Dr Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, the Regional
Director for World Health Organisation (WHO) in Africa, Dr Luis Sambo, and Prof
Barney Pityana, principal of University of South Africa (UNISA) will deliver
key messages to the delegates.

Press briefings

A photo opportunity has been scheduled for Sunday, 2 April. Members of the
media will need to meet at the Media Briefing Room, Meeting Room 11AB on level
2 of the ICC at 12:30 for a protocol briefing before moving to the press
gallery to set up for the photo opportunity with Her Majesty, Queen Rania
Al-Abdullah of Jordan, the Honourable Minister of Health, Dr Manto
Tshabalala-Msimang, the Regional Director for WHO in Africa, Dr Luis Sambo, and
Prof. Barney Pityana, the principal of UNISA representing the organisers of the
conference.

A press briefing has been scheduled immediately following the Opening
Ceremony, at 16:00 in the Media Briefing Room, Meeting Room 11AB on level 2 of
the ICC. Press briefings will be held on an ad hoc basis during the course of
the conference. Please keep an eye on the notices posted in the media briefing
room (Meeting Room 11AB on level 2).

The Conference Spokesperson is Prof. Mohammed Seedat, Chairperson of the
eighth World Conference on Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion. He is also
the Director for the Institute for Social and Health Sciences, and Director of
the MRC/UNISA Crime, Violence and Injury Lead Programme.

Final Programme

The final programme is now available and can be viewed the following

Each day the conference will open with a plenary session on a particular
theme. The topics are:

* (Sunday, 2 April: 16:30 - 17:30): Strengthening partnerships, promoting
inclusion and sustaining mobilization in safety promotion
* (Monday, 3 April: 09:00 - 10:30): Gender, religion and human rights in
violence prevention and safety promotion
* (Tuesday, 4 April: 09:00 - 10:30): Responsibilities and responses of states,
global and civic actors toward the realization of safety as a human right
* (Wednesday, 5 April: 09:00 - 10:30): What lessons can be learned about
current approaches, strategies and experiences?

On Monday and Tuesday following the plenary sessions, there will be three
simultaneous "State of the Art" sessions with the following topics:
(Monday, 3 April: 11:00 - 12:30):
* Session 1: Violence: prospects for peace in the public and intimate
domains
* Session 2: Influences of civil society and social movements in safety
promotion practice and policy
* Session 3: transportation safety and conflict in public spaces
(Tuesday, 4 April: 11:00 - 12:30)
*Session 4: Surveillance systems and methodologies for prioritizing
injuries
* Session 5: Disaster, trauma and cultural capital
* Session 6: Child and adolescent safety

The afternoons will be devoted to a diverse number of sessions on
wide-ranging topics concerning safety promotion and violence and injury
prevention.

Dullah Omar Memorial Lecture: This inaugural Memorial Lecture dedicated to
the late Abdullah Omar, the former South African Minister of Justice, and then
of Transport. He was a champion for equality, social justice and human rights.
This first in an annual lecture series will be delivered by Justice Pius Langa,
the Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court of South Africa.

Media Centre

A full service media centre will be available during the conference from 2
to 5 April at the ICC. The Media Centre will be open from 08:30 until 17:30.
The Media Centre is located in ICC Meeting Room 11E on level 2. All press
material will be available and distributed at the centre. The Media Centre will
be equipped with 8 computers with internet connections, a printer, fax machine
and telephones. Journalists are welcome to use their own laptop computers.
Staff will be available to assist journalists with background information and
interview requests. Press conferences and briefings are open to accredited
journalists and invited delegates only.
