On 21 May, the fifth democratic Parliament’s National Assembly (NA) will hold its first sitting. This is when Members to the NA are to be sworn in, the NA’s Speaker and Deputy Speaker are elected and when the President of the Republic of South Africa is elected.

On 22 May, Parliament’s National Council of Provinces (NCOP) holds its first sitting where Permanent Delegates appointed by Provincial Legislatures are sworn in and the NCOP Chairperson and Deputy Chairpersons are elected.

Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng, or a judge designated by him, calls the first sittings of both the NA and the NCOP and presides over the election of the NA Speaker, the President of the Republic and the NCOP Chairperson.

Media, who do not have Parliamentary media access permits, wishing to cover these sittings from the NA Chamber, the NCOP Chamber or wishing to broadcast from the Parliamentary precinct should send their details to the Media Management Unit officials listed below by 12 noon on Tuesday, 13 May.

Details required are:
Full name, ID/passport number, name of media organisation/media house and media title, designation (writer or photographer, for example), email address, telephone number and cell phone number.

Media wishing to broadcast from the Parliamentary precinct should also provide:
Make of vehicle(s), registration number(s), number(s) of vehicles, clearance certificates from service providers for temporary structures (tents, etc.) they wish to erect, other equipment and time of arrival.
