The Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs, Sport and Recreation, Mr Sakkie Jenner and his department will this weekend be launching the second phase of its Riaan Loots Campaign in George. The Campaign will coincide with the South West district's provincial club championships finals.
According to Minister Jenner “this campaign is as significant to sport, as sport is about fair, clean and honest participation.” The Riaan Loots Campaign is about sport which is free from violence and injury.
The first phase of the campaign was about conducting capacity building courses and profiling the campaign. The second phase is about taking ownership of the campaign by aggressively promoting fair play and injury free sport.
“Over the past few years, a number of incidents of violence in sport, but more specifically rugby, has cast a bad light on one of the most loves South African sport.
“Both my department and I are concerned about this fact and believe that the onus remains on the rugby clubs, to ensure that their teams and supporters are taught the skill of good sportsmanship,” says Minister Jenner.
South West District Rugby is an active partner in the campaign, as are Boland Rugby and Western Cape Rugby.
The third phase of the programme will be to register all coaches, administrators and technical officials in the sport. Equally important will be the attempt to register all sanctions in sport, thereby avoiding that an athlete, administrator, or anybody involved in sport which has been sanctioned, does not moonlight and bring other sport codes into disrepute.
