Robin Carlisle, Western Cape MEC of Transport and Public Works has revised the brochure published by his Ministry about the Chapman’s Peak toll road following feedback from member of the Hout Bay Residents Association and long-standing opponent of the project, Mr Keith Fawcett.
Mr Fawcett provided plans which were made available to the public during the public participation process between 2003 and 2008.
Carlisle admitted he was grateful for the correction.
‘The plans from the public participation process provided by Mr Fawcett show more clearly the extent of the facility and the location of the control centre on national parks land. The two floors of the control centre are also clearly visible in the cross section. These plans should finally put to bed the idea that the location on South African National Parks (SANParks) land or the size of the facility came as a surprise,’ said Carlisle.
In a letter to Premier Helen Zille, Mr Fawcett, who has been involved in the opposition to the project throughout both public participation processes from 2003 to 2008, pointed out that the Ministry had placed 2003 plans in the brochure which were listed as part of the public participation process, but were in fact not.
Mr Fawcett provided the correct plan and cross-section. The principle difference identified in the letter by Mr Fawcett was that the plans included by the Ministry showed a five-lane plaza, whereas a four-lane plaza was finally approved. Mr Fawcett has also been asked for further information by the Ministry.
The Ministry has corrected the error, and posted the revised document online. The document is available from the Western Cape Government website: westerncape.gov.za.
