M Shilowa on resignation of B Mabaso

Statement on the resignation of Social Development MEC

27 January 2006

Gauteng Premier Mbhazima Shilowa has accepted the resignation of the Gauteng
MEC for Social Development Bob Mabaso following receipt of a letter of
resignation from the MEC yesterday.

The Premier expressed his appreciation for the contribution Mr Mabaso has
made as part of government's efforts to improve the lives of the people of the
province.

Mr Mabaso's resignation follows the Premier's receipt of a complaint
relating to allegations of sexual harassment against the MEC. In the light of
the provincial government's consistent stand against the abuse of women, the
allegations are regarded in a very serious light.

The resignation coincides with the receipt of an interim report arising from
a preliminary investigation on the veracity of the allegation.

In line with the Code of Good Practice on Sexual Harassment, the identity of
the complainant will be withheld in order to protect her privacy and
dignity.

The Premier will in due course announce a new MEC but has in the meantime
appointed the MEC for Health Gwen Ramokgopa as acting MEC for Social
Development.
