The Western Cape MEC of Cultural Affairs, Sport and Recreation, Mr Sakkie Jenner will on Monday 15 February 2010 be launching the province’s playground football challenge in Malmesbury.
The playground football challenge, which is an initiative of the department's 2010 unit, aims to ensure that the hype and excitement which goes along with the FIFA 2010 Soccer World Cup, is felt throughout the province.
The playground football challenge will see schools from across the province firstly play qualifiers against each other in their specific regions. The last 32 teams to qualify will be brought to Cape Town to participate in the finals.
According to MEC Jenner, this is an opportunity for us to ensure that the youth of our province become involved in 2010 and what it has to offer.
Jenner further adds that, “sport very often serves as a catalyst against many of the problems our communities face on a daily basis by giving our children an alternative.”
