Labour on training for shop stewards and advice offices

Department of Labour and CCMA train shop stewards

21 June 2007

The Department of Labour in Cape Town in conjunction with the Commission for
Conciliation Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) are this week conducting training
for shop stewards and advice offices with specific attention to the Labour
Relations and Basic Conditions of Employment Act. The training started on
Tuesday and will end today, Thursday. The purpose of the training is to empower
and assist shop stewards at floor level with interpretation and understanding
of the legislation in order for them to help fellow workers to resolve work
place disputes effectively.

Labour Spokesperson Zolisa Sigabi said, "It is the department's view that
well informed shop stewards will reduce the cases received both at Labour
Centres and CCMA offices drastically as disputes will be resolved competently
at the work place". A list of the training schedule for the year is obtainable
from the CCMA offices in 78 Darling Street, Cape Town.
