Labour Inspectors, Labour union (SATAWU), Shop Stewards, and a representative from Shepard Security converged for a meeting at Lebowakgomo Circuit (Limpopo) in Thaba Moopo (Block B) on 28 October 2010. The meeting was initiated in order to curb complains leveled against Shepard Security Management by the Security Officers (employees). Officers are crying fowl that the employer does not pay them according to the sectoral determination, they are not provided with new set of uniform, thus forcing them to even mix uniform with own clothes and shoes, does not pay overtime, night, gun allowances.
“Sectoral Determination 6, under clause 3, clearly indicates that as from 1 September 2010, all grade D security officers must be paid an amount of R1 826.00, and according to the records in front of us the employer is paying only R1 641.00”, so said Moswati Thobakgale, a Generalist Inspector situated in Lebowakgomo.
“I only get paid R1 641.00 as opposed to the amount stipulated at the Sectoral Determination and was never provided with uniform since 2008 and now it’s damaged, when I ask for another pair, I am told that it is not there”, so said Emma Mphahlele, a shop steward within the employ.
Provincial Coordinator of Satawu Freddy Phupheli indicated that many Private Security Companies still use the scale of 2008/09 and this needs to stop. “Most of these guards are carrying guns, but are not compensated accordingly”, Phupheli added.
An Undertaking was secured and issued to the employer, enforcing him to fix matters which were found to be in tatters. “We will come back in three weeks to check if matters have been attended to, but nothing stops the employer to contact us for follow-up inspection before the three weeks period elapses”, Thobakgale said. “I agree that issues raised here are indeed valid and I promise to engage with management in dealing with these issues going forward”, said Mr Makhabane, a representative from Shepard Security.
