Inspectors in Thohoyandou Labour Centre have halted operations at Hardware City Complex situated at Thohoyandou City Centre because of numerous live and dangerous electrical wires which were found hanging all over the place during their inspection. The hardware owner, who is known as Mr Aslami Ebrahim Akoo sells building materials to the locals and has the same establishments in many centres within the Limpopo province.
“We had no choice but to close operations with immediate effect because these wirings are potentially hazardous and if left unfixed, they may result in fatal and serious injuries” says Mr Peter Mangale who is the Assistant Manager OHS in the department. According to Mangale these wires are also fire hazards which may even affect adjacent stores.
It was also found that the ceiling was in such a dilapidated state that it could fall on employees and customers at anytime, thus rendering the place unsafe for habitation. Mangale further highlighted that falling objects on unsuspecting employees and shoppers may result in very serious injuries.
“We have also requested the help from the local South African Police Service (SAPS) to ensure that the premises stay closed. Anyone who attempts to conduct business before the prohibition notice is revoked will be arrested.” Mangale added.
