Close to 200 large employers in Cape Town's River Club gathered for the
Department of Labour's workshop aimed at creating awareness and compliance with
the Employment Equity Act. This is part of the national road shows the
department is currently conducting is to encourage designated employers to
report online before the set deadline of 1 October.
Yesterday, a high powered team of employment equity experts in George told
employers and workers that only newly designated employers will be granted
extensions. The extensions will have to be approved by the department's
Director-General, Dr Vanguard Mkosana and notifications of extensions should be
submitted not later than August.
Employers who are already designated and have reported before will not be
granted extensions, said Petunia Sele, Assistant Manager in the Employment
Equity Directorate. Designated employers are required to have among other
things, annual objectives, affirmative action measures, numerical goals for
achieving equitable representation, a time table for each year, the duration of
the plan which must not be shorter than one year but no longer than five years,
HIV and AIDS measures and programmes, monitoring and evaluation procedures and
internal dispute resolution mechanisms.
The Act also requires employers to consult with all relevant stakeholders.
When submitting online, employers should have a reference number, internet
access, a username and a password. E-mails and faxes are no longer accepted.
Reports can be sent to the nearest provincial office and not to the labour
centres. Employers should report on-line using http://www.labour.gov.za or call 0860 101018 for
more information.
