Labour Department's R23 million grant benefits East Cape students

One thousand two hundred (1 200) Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET) students, out of 3 235, will on Friday, 24 graduate through the Department of Labour grant of R23,200,000 to Imvelo Development Consortium to train 4 000 unemployed people in ABET levels of one and two over a period of 18 months.

The graduation is as a result of objective three of the National Skills Development Strategy which indicates that by 2010, at least 100 000 unemployed people have participated in ABET level programmes, of which at least 70% have achieved ABET level four. The training implemented also in Chris Hani, Amathole, OR Tambo, Alfred Nzo and UKhahlamba regions.

The training which commenced last year has seen beneficiaries acquiring six learning areas in Xhosa level one and two, English level one and two and Numeracy level one and two. The beneficiaries were also trained in skills programme in the following fields: community water, health and hygiene, plumbing and household reticulation, home based care and first aid, arts and craft and personal finance.

Amongst the beneficiaries of this programme 580 males benefited, 2 655 are women. 593 are beneficiaries between age 15 to 36, 2 732 are 36 years and above.

"The project so far has managed to create at least 200 jobs during its life span as facilitators, class monitors and assessors who participated in this programme were unemployed," said Mr Page Boikanyo.
