Labour on charge of bribery against employer

Department of Labour lays a charge of bribery against
employer

10 December 2007

The Department of Labour has laid a charge of bribery against an employer
for attempting to bribe the department's inspectors.

The employer who is of Asian origin, allegedly approached the East London
based inspector to assist him in explaining aspects of the labour relations law
to his employees. The inspector then requested a colleague to accompany him to
the employer's workplace.

The inspectors noted that the same employer was a month ago served with a
compliance order for failing to pay his employees an amount of R8000 00 on
outstanding wages. He objected to this at the time. He then offered the two
inspectors R200 each to withdraw the compliance order. The two took the money
which was in two separate envelopes.

Spokesperson Zolisa Sigabi praised the inspectors for protecting their
integrity and the image of the department. She added, "A docket detailing the
charge has been opened at the Fleet Street Police Station, in East London and
the R400 given to the inspectors has been attached as evidence. We are now
awaiting a court date."
