Easter weekend

10 April 2007

EMRS staffers have gone all out to save thousands of lives on road accidents
in KwaZulu-Natal this Easter weekend. The staff responded to more than a
thousand accident calls saving thousands of lives of casualties.

With road traffic volumes swelling by the minute during this period in
KwaZulu-Natal, the accidents also rose. EMRS staff came in handy to save as
many lives as possible. The Department of Health has deployed emergency workers
at strategic points throughout the province to assist on road emergencies and
medical rescues with greater emphasis in the busy areas of eThekwini and
Umgungundlovu. This campaign will run through until the end of May when the
holiday season is over.

"Our hard working men and women were on roads, countryside and homes saving
lives of pedestrians, motorists, even victims who were injured in criminal
activities. Our mission is to save lives and we will do whatever it takes,"
said EMRS's Umgungundlovu Operations Manager, Mr Steven Mqadi.

Since the start of the holiday season, the EMRS have assisted in 128
incidents involving 440 people. These include the tragic accident that happened
in Bulwer involving a minibus and a bus. This accident claimed a life and six
people sustained serious injuries. Another tragic accident happened on the N2
between Hibberdene and Umzumbe where vehicles collided claiming four lives and
other people sustained serious injuries.
