Health MEC condemns break-in at Kalafong Hospital

The Gauteng MEC for Health Mr Hope Papo strongly condemns all incidents of theft and sabotage in any Gauteng health facility.

This follows a break-in incident at Kalafong Provincial Tertiary Hospital in the early hours of Sunday, 15 December 2013.

In what is suspected to be acts of organised crime and sabotage in the hospital, three offices were broken into: main cashier’s office, Quality Assurance Office and Information Technology Office.

Perpetrators broke into the strong room and stole cash, cheque book and face value documents as well as computers, hard drives and memory sticks from other offices.

In recent times, the hospital has also experienced similar incidents of theft of flushmasters, toilet seats and taps in most public areas leading to serious inconvenience to users.

“Members of the community should to take ownership of health facilities in their respective communities,”

“Communities should protect health facilities and report any form of vandalism and suspected acts of theft and criminality to the Hospital Boards and the police,” added the MEC.

The MEC has also announced that this incident has been reported to the police for investigation. In the meantime, the department will work closely with the hospital management to intensify security measures to prevent further incidents of a similar nature.
