H1N1 cases in Mpumalanga

Since the outbreak of H1N1 swine flu reached South Africa, there are now twelve (12) confirmed cases in Mpumalanga.

For the table providing more detail of all these cases go to: http://www.mpumalanga.gov.za/healthsocserv/news/media_releases/2009/20090804_1.htm.

The department would like to once more urge all people to be calm as these situations pose no harm to any person. It is important to equally note that all these cases were never hospitalised; they were seen and sent back home. Our communicable disease control team is on high alert and is prepared for any eventuality. We also have enough stock of medication (Tami flu) to deal with even more cases.

The following information remains pivotal to all people:

Symptoms of swine flu which are:
* Aches and pains, fever, fatigue, runny nose, sore throat, vomiting and diarrhoea
* Swine flu spreads in the same way as seasonal flu through coughing and sneezing. It is an airborne disease. You cannot catch it through eating pork.
Swine flu transmission can be prevented by:
* Coughing and sneezing into a tissue or hanky; washing hands thoroughly.
* Swine flue is treatable with antiviral. These are available in South Africa but may only be used under the direction of a medical doctor.
* Should you have symptoms of the flu and have travelled recently to areas that have swine flu please consult your nearest health facility.
