Former OR Tambo Executive Mayor, Mr Dingaan Myolwa, sworn in as new Member of the Provincial Legislature

The Speaker of the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature, Fikile Xasa, has sworn-in Mr Dingaan Myolwa as a new Member of the Provincial Legislature (MPL) today, 22 October 2013. This follows a vacancy created by the resignation of former Member Mkhangeli Matomela.

The Honourable Speaker congratulated and welcomed the new Member in his deployment and venture of building a National Democratic Society. “We congratulate our new honorable Member of the Legislature. We have embarked on Sectoral Parliaments for the current year but still have House sittings scheduled as per the Legislature programme.

In as much as we are winding up the fourth term of the democratic government, it is by no mistake that you are only joining the Legislature at this juncture. We welcome you, hoping that you will add value to the core business of the institution and in making sure that public participation is fully realised,” the Speaker said.

The new MPL, honorable Myolwa is a member of the African National Congress. He served as the underground Umkhonto Wesizwe member and in the military camp in Tanzania while in exile. He also served as the PR Councilor for Ingquza Hill Local and OR Tambo respectively. Until recently, he served as the OR Tambo Executive Mayor.

The former OR Tambo Executive Mayor holds international certificates in Local Government and administration, and feels that his experience and knowledge will help towards the advancement of Legislature’s mandate. “I know the pressure will be more now that I am an MPL but I will do my best to serve the African National Congress led government,” he said.

The newly sworn-in member also pleaded with the electorate to grant the current government yet another opportunity to do more. “The ANC government has improved the lives of our people immensely. In rural areas, the landscape has changed completely; there are access roads, electrification and clean drinking water. In 20 years, we did what the former government failed to do in 100 years,” he added.

The honorable Member will serve in the following Portfolio committees:

  • Local Government & Traditional Affairs.
  • Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture.
  • Economic Development and Environmental Affairs and Tourism.
  • Public Participation and Petitions.
  • Wellness & Enabling Facilities

The Deputy Chief Whip, Michael Peter; Chairperson of Committees, Alfred Mtsi; Deputy Chairperson of Committees, Noxolo Abraham-Ntantiso and Secretary to the Legislature, Pumelele Ndamase were also in attendance.

Thanking you in advance.
