Western Cape Department of Labour inspectors hit the road last week starting on 16 to 18 September 2009, this, in an effort of establishing whether construction employers in the Cape Town metropolitan municipality who were given sixty days to comply with the Occupational Health and Safety regulations have heeded the call or not.
These follow up inspections come after the July construction inspections, where it was established that a number of construction employers are still not complying with regulations as prescribed in the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
As the inspectors were to engage in this important task, they understood a clear mandate from the Provincial Executive Manager, Mr Teboho Thejane that as they go out to conduct these inspections, they need ensure that whatever happens, worker safety takes precedence over anything else.
Of the 25 follow up inspections conducted, 24 employers complied with the notices issued to them during the initial inspections. There is only one employer who failed to comply and this employer will be dealt with in accordance with the act for failing to comply.
“As the department we will continue ensuring that the department’s visibility is enhanced and that our inspectors enforce the act and its regulations in this and other sectors,” Teboho said.
Labour inspectors will again hit the road starting from 5 to 9 October 2009, this time they will be doing inspections in the farm areas of Montague, near Worcester.
