What goods may I bring into South Africa?

Travellers entering South Africa may bring in certain goods without paying customs duties and VAT, provided they fall within allowable limits and are for personal use.

Examples of goods that may qualify include:

  • Personal clothing and gifts
  • Alcohol and tobacco products (limited quantities)
  • Perfume and toiletries
  • Cash (within allowable amounts)

Goods that exceed these limits or are for commercial use may be subject to tax and import duties.

Customs rules and allowances may change. For the latest guidelines, visit the official South African Revenue Service (SARS):

If you're unsure, it’s safest to declare your goods to customs officials on arrival.

Prohibited and restricted goods

Some goods are not allowed into South Africa, such as illegal drugs, counterfeit items, and firearms without permits. Others, such as animal or plant products and certain medicines, may require special permits.

Bringing in animal or plant products?

You must have a permit from the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD) if you’re carrying items such as:

  • Meat, dairy, honey, eggs, or other animal products
  • Live animals, fresh produce, seeds, or wood

These items may also require a health certificate from the country of origin. Failure to declare them can result in confiscation or fines.
