What are the requirements for travelling with children?

All children (under 18) arriving in or departing from South Africa must have the correct documentation in line with Immigration Regulations designed to protect minors from trafficking and abuse.

Document requirements

  • Child’s valid passport (everyone needs one).
  • Unabridged birth certificate or equivalent parentage document required in most cases.
  • If a child is travelling with only one parent or someone other than their parents, you’ll also need:
    • Parental consent affidavit or court order granting custody/legal guardianship.
    • Copy of the non-travelling parent/guardian’s ID or passport and their contact details.
  • Unaccompanied minors must also bring consent from both parents/legal guardians, a letter from the host in South Africa, and contact details.

Immigration rules may change—always check the Department of Home Affairs website for the latest guidance before travel:

Exemptions

  • South African children using South African passports don't need to carry a birth certificate.
  • Children in direct transit through an airport may be exempt.
  • Foreign children with a valid South African visa don’t need extra documents beyond those submitted with the visa application.

If uncertain about any documents needed, always carry supporting documentation or seek advice from the Department of Home Affairs to avoid travel delays.
