World Heart Day is a global initiative of the World Heart Federation (WHF), with co-sponsorship from the World Health Organisation (WHO) and UNESCO. World Heart Day aims to raise global awareness of cardiovascular disease and its prevention. At least 80% of premature deaths from heart disease and stroke could be avoided if the main risk factors, tobacco, unhealthy diet and physical inactivity, are controlled.

The campaign emphasises prevention measures and risk factors, which include:

  • Smoking
  • High blood pressure
  • High blood cholesterol (increased lipid levels)
  • Diabetes
  • Lack of exercise
  • Obesity and
  • Stress
