Construction work is in progress at the current Grassy Park community day care centre, which will upgrade the day care centre to a clinic that will see 150 more patients per day.
"The new facility will bring much needed relief to this community with the spaces to educate, treat and reduce the spread of diseases," said Theuns Botha, Western Cape MEC Health, when he visited the construction site yesterday.
Botha viewed the building in progress, and inspected the daily operation of the current facility. The estimated population of the catchment area is 30 000 people and the present clinic is too small to provide the comprehensive package of care for this community.
The new Grassy Park clinic will be the gateway clinic and the drainage pathway is referral to Lotus River community health centre and Victoria hospital in Wynberg.
The new clinic will be based on the urban model providing a comprehensive and integrated package of essential primary healthcare services. This clinic will function eight hours per day, five days per week.
The new clinic will be able to treat a total of 400 patients per day, which is a significant capacity improvement on the existing 250 patients that can be treated per day at the current facility.
Whereas the current facility is cramped and able to offer basic medical consultations, the new facility will have better, bigger and more patient friendly waiting areas with proper ventilation, with an improved and dedicated baby clinic, a pharmacy and dispensing area, which have been designed in accordance with the new pharmacy act.
The new facility will have a dedicated area for patient rehabilitation programmes, for example physiotherapy and occupational therapy, where to date patients have had to travel to the Retreat Community Health Centre for these treatments. Tuberculosis (TB) testing areas will be separate to protect staff and patients.
