Conservation and Environment

North West Premier, Edna Molewa, has appointed Jan Serfontein as Member of
the Executive Council (MEC) responsible for Agriculture, Conservation and
Environment.

Serfontein brings to his new responsibility a wealth of experience. The
provincial government is confident that he will serve the people of the North
West with pride and contribute towards the goal of meeting the aspirations of
our people.

MEC Jan Lodewyk Hoek Serfontein was born in Potchefstroom on 23 May 1944 and
matriculated in 1961. He completed his Agricultural Diploma at the Agricultural
College Potchefstroom in 1963. He worked fulltime in the Serfontein Family
Farming Business since 1964, serving on various committees during that time,
namely Chicken Production Committee, South African Poultry Association (Sapa),
Advice Committee of the Minister of Agriculture for Animal Improvement and a
Member of the Brahman Cattle Breeders Association.

From 1994 he was at National Parliament in Cape Town where he served on
Agricultural and Finance Committees and was Treasurer of the Parliamentarian
Rugby Club. In 1997 he became a Member of the North West Provincial Legislature
where he served as Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Agriculture and
Environment. He also serves on the Finance and Economic Affairs Committees.
Serfontein is working very closely with all role players in agriculture.

The provincial government is confident that, as part of the leadership
collective that constitutes the Executive Council, Serfontein will play a
pivotal role in the national effort of expanding access to a better life for
all.

MEC Serfontein replaces MEC Mandlekosi Mayisela.
