Domestic sector under siege

The Department of Labour’s energetic team of inspectors will be focusing their attention on the domestic sector from 17 to 21 January.

The blitz inspections will take place throughout the country’s nine provinces with Western Cape inspectors visiting areas such as Constantia, Bishops Court, Pinelands,   Vredenburg and Somerset West.

“These blitz inspections come just after the annual increases implemented in December and these visits serve as follow up to check as to whether employers are adhering to the determination,” says Teboho Thejane, Western Cape’s Chief Director.

In line with the department’s intention to create decent work, the blitz inspections will focus on compliance with Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA); Labour Relations Act(LRA) and Unemployment Insurance Fund Act (UIF), as well as other legislations governing this sector.

“Employers found in contravention of the labour laws will be issued with relevant notices to rectify the identified non compliance issues. These are undertakings which will, if noncompliance persists beyond the prescribed time, be followed by compliance orders, ” Thejane said.

Thejane added that in order to ensure that contraventions identified are rectified; follow up inspections have been scheduled for the week of 21 February 2011.

Since the inception of the Domestic Sectoral Determination in September 2002, the department has registered about 740 000 employees and there are still many more who are not registered. At present the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) processes an average of 1 515 claims per month from this sector.
