Labour Director-General Nkosinathi Nhleko is to present the much anticipated Annual Industrial Action Report 2010 during his first media briefing at the department’s head office tomorrow (September 20).
Assisted by Labour Market Policy (LMP) and Research Unit the Director-General is expected to present the key findings of the report. The department’s report captures 74 work stoppages in its database. It will also shed light on last year’s long-drawn public service sector workers strike to support their cause for better working conditions and wage increases.
The report will highlight some of key features of strike incidents in South Africa in 2010.
Among these are: causes of strikes; the degree of strike activity measured in working days lost compared to previous years; the sectors affected most by the industrial action; the use of “scab” labour; the number of lock-outs; value of lost wages during industrial action plus days lost by trade union movement; and average settlement in relation to inflation rate.
