The repealed Standards Act 29 of 1993 intended:
- to provide for the promotion and maintenance of standardization and quality in connection with commodities and the rendering of services, and
- for that purpose to provide for the continued existence of the South African Bureau of Standards, as the national institution for the promotion and maintenance of standardization, and the control thereof by a council, and
- for matters connected therewith.
