Imprint Amendment Act, 1994 (No. 18 of 1994)

Act

  • to amend the Imprint Act, 1993, so as
    • to oblige the printer of a newspaper to affix his or her name and the address of his or her business on the newspaper;
    • to provide that the Imprint Act, 1993, shall also apply in the territories of the former Republics of Transkei, Bophuthatswana, Venda and Ciskei;
    • to repeal certain laws; and
  • to provide for matters connected therewith.

BE IT ENACTED by the Parliament of the Republic of South Africa, as follows:- 

Substitution of section 2 of Act 43 of 1993

1. The following section is hereby substituted for section 2 of the Imprint Act, 1993:

"Notification of name of printer and address of his or her business on certain printed matter

(1) Subject to subsection (2) any printer of printed matter [other than a newspaper as defined in section 1 of the Newspaper Registration Act, 1971 (Act No. 63 of 1971)] shall affix on all such printed matter produced and distributed in the Republic, a notice in legible type and in [either] any of the official languages of the Republic, containing the words 'Printed by ... ', followed by his or her full and correct name and the full and correct address at which he or she conducts his or her business of printing, or an abbreviation of his or her name registered in terms of section 3.

(2) Subsection (1) shall not apply to a printer of printed matter not intended for public sale or public distribution.".

Repeal of sections 8 to 15 inclusive of Act 43 of 1993 

2. Sections 8 to 15 inclusive of the Imprint Act, 1993, are hereby repealed.

Application of Act 43 of 1993

3. The Imprint Act, 1993 (Act No. 43 of 1993), shall, from the date of commencement of the Imprint Amendment Act, 1994, also apply in the territories of the former Republics of Transkei, Bophuthatswana, Venda and Ciskei.

Repeal of laws

4. (1) The following laws are hereby repealed:

(a) The Newspaper Registration Act, 1971 (Act No. 63 of 1971), of the former Republic of South Africa;

(b) The Newspaper and Imprint Registration Act, 1977 (Act No. 19 of 1977), of the former Republic of Transkei;

(c) The Newspaper and Imprint Registration Act, 1979 (Act No. 18 of 1979), of the former Republic of Bophuthatswana;

(d) The Newspaper and Imprint Registration Amendment Act, 1979 (Act 15 No. 58 of 1979), of the former Republic of Bophuthatswana;

(e) The Newspaper and Imprint Registration Act, 1981 (Act No. 22 of 1981), of the former Republic of Venda;

(f) The Newspaper and Imprint Registration Act, 1971 (Act No. 63 of 1971), of the former Republic of Ciskei.

(2) The reference to the former Republic of South Africa in subsection (1) shall be construed as a reference to the territory of the Republic of South Africa as it was immediately before the commencement of the Constitution.

Short title

5. This Act shall be called the Imprint Amendment Act, 1994.
