Department of Labour kicks off International Campaign

The Department of Labour will kick off its international programme for the year with a visit to the African Regional Labour Administration Centre’s (ARLAC) Governing Council meeting in Lusaka, Zambia from 7 to 11 February.

Topping the agenda will be the centre’s finances and payment of subscription fees by member states; looking at the centre’s planned activities for the year and making inputs thereof; and evaluating the Director of ARLAC’s performance.

The meeting will also focus on striking appropriate balance between training, consultancies and research, supported by high quality information services as a means to improving the performance of the labour administration system in member states, thereby increasing its contribution to economic and social development.

Les Kettledas, the Deputy Director General in Labour Policy and  Labour Market Programmes and Siyanda Nxawe, the Deputy Director General, Inspection and Enforcement Services will lead the South African delegation to this 37th Session of the ARLAC Governing Council meeting.

The body comprises 19, English speaking member states; being:- Botswana, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Namibia, Nigeria, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

This is an annual council meeting attended by Ministers from member states as well as representatives from the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
