Department of Labour and International Labour Organisation (ILO) turn attention to inspections

Labour Minister, Membathisi Mdladlana, is to deliver the keynote address at the joint policy conference of the Department of Labour and the International Labour Organisation in Kievits Kroon, west of Pretoria next week Tuesday, 28 September.

The much awaited event will take place under the theme: "Strengthening labour inspection systems in South Africa".

The meeting will bring together the top officials from the two institutions during a period when the department has put labour inspections high on its agenda, with monthly inspections in several sectors having become the norm.

"Sectors that have already been inspected include agricultural, wholesale and retail, hospitality, security, iron and steel as well as construction," Page Boikanyo, departmental spokesperson, said.

The ILO director in South Africa, Vic Van Vuuren, will open the event and the Honourable Minister will render his official address at the closing ceremony on Tuesday.

The conference will also look at building strategic partnership between labour inspectors and other enforcement agencies as well as cooperation with stakeholders.

"This will be done with the clear objective of intensifying social dialogue and strategic partnerships."

Other topics to be covered at the conference will include the legal framework of labour legislation, labour inspections and the judiciary, capacity development and empowerment of labour inspectors.

The meeting will end with a press conference at 12:00am on Tuesday.
