Department hosts Women Summit on Cooperatives

This year's celebration of the Women's Month marks the 55 th anniversary of the historic march by over 20 000 women to the Union Buildings in August 1956. The marchers were demanding that the apartheid government recognise and respect their human rights.

Following on the Provincial theme “Kuyasheshwa– Working together for the economic advancement of Gauteng women”, i t is also a period when the country takes stock of challenges that persist in hampering socio-economic and political emancipation of women. The month is celebrated through a number of activities honoring women's struggles and achievements.

Realising these challenges , the department is hosting a Women's Summit to engage and share valuable information on tendering processes, formation of co-operatives specific to the work of the department and any other issues hampering economic development of women. The Summit will allow women at all levels of business development to network, exchange ideas on how to start and grow their business ventures. A Departmental Women in Transport and Roads Construction Summit has been planned for 25 August 2011 at the Pyramid Hotel in Johannesburg.

The objectives of the summit include the following:

  • To share and exchange knowledge on processes of forming co-operatives that are specific to the core business of the department;
  • To share infomation on processes of the Construction and Industry Development Board;
  • To share knowledge on how to access government's information, especially on procurement and tendering processes.

80 women representatives from various formations, such as South African (SANWIT) and PWMSA will be in attendance. The approach is to have a combination of established business-women and those that are starting out, seeking to access economic opportunities. The summit will also provide a platform for networking.
