The Department of Communications (DoC) through the e-Skills Institute and Telkom South Africa will partner with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Development Sector to host the Global Human Capacity Development Forum (GHCDF) and the 2nd e-Skills Summit from 22 to 25 October 2012 in Cape Town.
This year’s e-Skills Summit coincides and shares the same focus with the Global ICT Forum the Department of Communications together with the ITU decided to host both events jointly.
The aim of Global ICT Forum is to draw attention to the need and importance of capacity building in driving the e-Agenda across different countries. The objective of the Forum is to establish both short and long term strategies and implementation mechanisms on human capacity development worldwide.
The Summit’s primary focus will be to asses the progress made based on the 2010 National e-Skills Plan of Action (NeSPA) document compiled by The Information Society Institute (TISI).The e-Skills Summit seeks to develop an integrated Plan of Action for e-Skills enhancement in the country.
The Forum and Summit will both be linked via live streams through six (6) Telkom Centre for Learning regional institutions throughout the country, namely; Gauteng (Olifantsfontein),
KwaZulu-Natal (Durban), Free State (Bloemfontein) and Western Cape (University of the Western Cape).
The theme for this year’s Global ICT Forum is “Digital Inclusion: Preparing Human Capital for the Knowledge Based Economy”
There will be a host of Ministers attending this event ranging from Zimbabwe, Lesotho and Solomon Islands among others. Representatives from various National Departments including Higher Education, Basic Education, Department of Trade and Industry and National Planning Commission will also be in attendance.
The Minister of Communications will be giving the keynote address and welcoming the international counterparts to the South African Summit.
