Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities hosts an information session and dialogue on ukuthwala

The Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities (the CRL Rights Commission), is a Chapter 9 institution established in terms of Act 19 of 2002. Its main function being to promote respect for the rights of cultural, religious and linguistic communities. It also aims to promote and develop peace, friendship, humanity, tolerance and national unity among and within cultural, religious and linguistic communities, on the basis of equality, non-discrimination and free association.

To fulfill its mandate the CRL Rights Commission has held several interactions with critical role players in government, cultural and religious communities, traditional leaders and children's rights activists to discuss the challenges faced by the country through what the media has termed "ukuthwala". These interactions were done in order to reach consensus on what the cultural practice of “ukuthwala” entails and what it does not.

As the Chapter 9 Institution tasked with promoting and protecting cultural practices, among other issues, it is our role and mandate to give direction to the country on this “ukuthwala” cultural practice. We also aim to explain to the participants what it is that as the CRL Rights Commission we have done to bring clarity on this critical issue.

To effect this the CRL Rights Commission hereby invites you to an information session and dialogue on ukuthwala. This activity aims to move the country towards a concerted effort in protecting the rights of children and young women whose lives are being negatively affected by the impact of these abductions.
