Labour Minister, Mildred Nelisiwe Oliphant, is to emphasise the importance of sustained growth, investment and job creation at the annual bargaining conference of the South African Clothing and Textile Workers’ Union (Sactwu) in her address to delegates in Durban on Friday, 4 March.
She is, however, expected to stress social dialogue as a necessary precondition for the country to succeed on its mission.
Oliphant will speak under the theme: "What is to be done".
Andre Kriel, general secretary of Sactwu, said the conference will be an opportunity for the union to review its bargaining strategies and discuss and develop new mandates for this year’s negotiation round.
The Minister is further expected to remind delegates that without collective bargaining, workers will not realise better living standards, conditions of employment and a democratised workplace.
She could also use the occasion to talk about the topical Decent Work agenda, which aims to secure the human dignity of workers. Also sure to be on her plate will be the labour bills currently under review at National Economic Development and Labour Council (Nedlac).
The event will be held at the Marine Parade Hotel.
