The North West Department of Local Government and Traditional Affairs will on 18 to 21 April 2011 launch the clean communities project, an initiative intended to support job creation and enhance community participation in service delivery.
The project to be implemented in five municipalities: Kgetleng Rivier, Lekwa Teemane, Moretele, Tswaing, Ventersdorp and later in Rustenburg, will support communities and create a total of 1 200 jobs .
MEC Paul Sebegoe will next week launch the project in five of the six municipalities with the exception of Rustenburg as the project launch in the municipality is set to be rolled out in partnership with mining houses in the area to allow for empowerment of both communities and Small, Medium, Micro Enterprises (SMMEs).
The labour intensive project will focus on waste management, cleaning of culverts, grass cutting and the construction of storm water drainage systems.
Participants will undergo training based on relevant fields through the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) facilitated by the Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport while the Department of Local Government and Traditional Affairs together with the relevant municipality will develop an exit strategy for the project beneficiaries.
The initiative is a contribution towards a commitment by South Africa to the United Nation's Millennium Development Goals to eradicate hunger and poverty by 2014. Statistics by the Global Insight Data (2007) reveal that 56% of households in the North West province live in extreme poverty.
