Bogus labour inspector arrested

A man (48) claiming to be Labour Inspector was arrested today in Bronkhorstpruit and faces charges of fraud and impersonating labour inspectors.

“This followed Onsherber old age Manager lodging a complaint about a man who was selling labour legislation charts of basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA), Employment Equity Act (EEA) and Skills Development fund chart” said Gauteng Labour Department spokesman Mishack Magakwe. The manager deposited an amount of R2 530.80 into bogus inspector’s account.

"The bogus official allegedly told his victim to pay up or face a fine of R10 000 from the department. The Department of Labour official said on his arrival at the scene, the suspect was still insisting he was representing the department, and was not fazed even when he identified himself as the real Labour inspector," said Magakwe.

"It is true that businesses are obliged by law to keep certain posters containing summaries of the Basic Condition of Employment Act and the Employment Equity Act but Inspectors are not allowed to receive any money from employers. Genuine Labour Inspectors would be able to identify themselves with their Inspector identification card."

We want to emphasise that the department does not have any agreements or partnerships with any recruitment agencies or have authorised any organisation to render our services at a fee. Employers need to be extra vigilant and should report any suspicious visits and requests to our nearby offices.

All labour legislations can be sourced from the offices of the Department of Labour nationwide or on the departmental website http://www.labour.gov.za
