Best Municipalities in Mpumalanga to be honoured

The Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism will be rewarding municipalities which performed well during the annual Greenest Municipality Competition (GMC) tomorrow (Friday).

The GMC is aimed at creating environmental education and awareness whilst at the same time encouraging municipalities and people to play an active role in the moral regeneration of their communities, and to re-ignite pride and commitment in cleaning up their environments. It furthermore improves the quality of life for all South Africans by addressing issues pertaining to environmental protection, social upliftment and economic growth. It enables municipalities to enhance the principles of sustainable development.

The competition is an element of the National Waste Management Strategy aimed at implementing policies and legislation at grass roots level and consists of five core elements, namely:

  • Waste management
  • Energy efficiency and conservation
  • Water management
  • Landscaping, tree planting and beautification
  • Public participation and community empowerment and
  • Leadership and institutional arrangements.

All municipalities are expected to participate in the programme and the municipality with best practises will represent Mpumalanga province in the National GMC.
